Gu Family Book - The end or just the beginning?

Now that the drama, “Gu Family Book” or “Kang Chi, The beginning” has ended, I have loads of things to say about the drama, not all of them good. So lets start off. Be warned Spoilers Ahead.

First of all, the ending was One Shocker. I am not really the crying sort but this drama, especially Lee Seung gi made me feel like this while watching the finale...

Once the drama ended, I was like this. Not sure cause now I have to find a new purpose on Mondays and Tuesday or if the finale brought this on.

I had wondered why the drama has such diverse names : "Gu Family book" and "Kang Chi, the beginning". Where they thinking of a season 2? I am not sure. But what I am sure of is that the Gu Family Book plot which seemed to be the focal point in the first couple episodes was brought up very rarely as episodes went on, usually when people didn't have anything to say. Ok, I am exaggerating.

Moving on. There also seemed to be story-lines that seemed so weak and were left hanging. Like CJ being jealous of YW in episode 11. Gon’s secret love for YW.  And, why even have a TS-YW engagement. Ok, so they got formally engaged but KC and YW seemed to be parading their love in front of everyone including her father and her fiancé. The worst part was that nobody seemed to mind including the fiancé  And the whole hypnotized TS. I mean what was that? I would have liked to see TS caught betraying KC and saving his sister if he was in his sane mind. Now that would have been more heart wrenching.  And don’t get me started on the whole Japanese story-line. Towards the end,I didn't care and just skipped the whole damn thing. It was good for a couple of episodes with the whole mysterious plot but after a point it was all rolling eyes. However, these are just a few minor details.

Now to the good part! This was anything but a stereotypical drama. I loved all the characters especially Gon. He was a strong character and I loved every minute he was on screen.

KangChi and Yeo Wool were the sweetest part of the drama and I just loved their relationship.

From bickering,
to friendship

 to love...

Kangchi had to act like a noble idiot but thankfully that was for a few dumb minutes before he got his act together. Yeo Wool is now my most favorite character in drama history. She is smart, logical, rebellious and when KC broke up with her, she got pissed rather than upset. Atta girl. It’s a pleasure to see such a refreshing character. One thing you will love about this drama is that, unlike most dramas, quarrels are not drawn out for long. Misunderstanding are cleared almost instantly which was a pleasure to watch. I am so happy that people communicate here.

Kang Chi was not too complicated a character. He did not have any angst and was optimistic and a lovable hero. His maturity and his relationship with the people in his life was nice to see; from Gon to Lee Soon Shin. I liked the fact that though he was an orphan, he has more than 3 father figures. Lord Park, Lee Soon Shin and his human father, Choi. His relationship with his mother was short yet oddly satisfying.

I also admire Cheong Jo's(CJ). She's the most realistic character in the whole show and one person whom I suffered with the most. Born into nobility and forced into becoming a gisaeng, she didn't break and became stronger. There were times I just felt like standing up and clapping for her. Like in the scene where she poisons her gisaeng senior to put her in place, where she looks GW in his face and says she is going to defeat him. WOW girl! you are awesome! She did, nevertheless show shades of grey while trying to make YW jealous. However, I feel that they could have given her more depth and a stronger storyline as her character was developing well.

Now that I have seen the finale, I am still nursing my broken heart but am hopeful for a sequel. I admit I was quite pissed at the whole reincarnation track at first. (I didn't need another Rooftop Prince.) It's kind of bittersweet as KC did find his YW again, but I am left feeling an emptiness that he was alone for 400+ years while searching for her (I am a hopeless romantic). He chose the one thing he did not want from the beginning: to remain a Gumiho.

The more I think about it, though, I sort of like the ending. It makes thier love story stronger. That it can last through generations. Death cannot do them apart! All in All, a good drama. A good laugh and a good cry. That's what the doc ordered!

Off  I go for now, I need to see some hot kissing scenes to cheer up and find a new drama to watch :)

  1. I accidentally started watching this on Hulu...then I couldn't live without it! The ending was NOT WHAT I WANTED...but I actually loved the ending and I can't wait for Season 2...if there is no season 2, then my heart is as broke as Dam Yeo Wool when Kang Chi tried to break up with her! :-)

    1. With such a title (Kang Chi, the beginning) I'm pretty sure they'll make a sequel. It just shouldn't take so long that we forget about this drama.

  2. I agree with most of your points. I would have wanted to see more of Gon. Not a love triangle (rectangle in this one?) struggle like most dramas do but just enough to show about his character. How he came to love YW.
TS was very accepting of their relationship that's for sure. He wasn't one of my favorites but like the rest of the cast, they all grew on me. They all did. I think the cast did amazing and the OST was beautiful.

    I enjoyed reading, thank you!

Yup the cast, even though they were not important characters, grew on me. And I loved the dinner scenes where everyone is gathered around having food. :)

    1. Well most movies end bad, depending on the writers. I seen and have over 300 movies & only a few are actually good. these Korean dramas are first time watching them. Mostly Chinese, now these. This one is so mixed up it needs no 2nd season.

  6. The ship, the country being sold out, and the war (which was teasingly cooked for about 20 episodes of the drama); they did not happen. I think they add to the attributes of the drama as a cliffhanger. It has no perfect story, but I admit myself to be perfectly charmed by this blissful drama. Awesome.

  8. it supposed to has a sequel
the drama title is Gu Family Book, so the next story should be about KC adventure to become human after met YW, like what his father done when he met KC's mother and find the Gu Family Book. So we could know what Gu Family book really is and who made it and whoever succeed to becoming human. aaaaaaaaaa cant wait cant wait to see the sequel >.<

  9. Gu Family Book Season 2 Please!!!! It has to be cause clue 1: Gang Ji, the beginning. So there must be an ending. Clue 2: The book hasn't been found yet. Clue 3: The story ends in the year of 2013 with an open ending. So easy to continue this story for fans. Please, please, please, can't wait. I enjoyed it very much, amazing cast.
